Little Things: Feeling Inspired

As simple as…

ideas

+

a cute little notebook

Ideas. They flood my mind at any given moment. It could be something I saw at a store and thought “I could totally make that” or how I’m going to set the table for a party. A paint color, a craft idea, anything goes.  I’m a list maker, a note-taker, an idea scribbler. A wake-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-idea-writer-downer. It’s my gift and my curse. I have pens and paper stashed all over the house. On my nightstand, in a basket on the kitchen table, in my bathroom drawer–hey, you never know when inspiration may strike. I even keep a notebook handy in my purse and one in my car…if for someone reason I don’t have my purse. With all these notebooks out I like to make sure they are at least pleasing to the eye. So, it really is as simple as just buying a cute little notebook.

Here’s a few of my latest favorites:

P1100933_zpsa7855863

I can usually find some great designs at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or Target. Bookstores like Barnes & Noble and Books-a-million also offer some fun varieties.

P1100941

And it’s always a plus if it has an inspirational quote on it:

P1100935 P1100936 P1100940

Are you a crazy note scribbler like me, or are you one of those gifted remember it all kind of people?

Great Reads: Let’s Get a Little Cuckoo!

Morning!

We’re getting a little cuckoo over here…Cuckoo4Design that is!

I always enjoy a DIY & Design Blog that can make me laugh and still offer great ideas. This is exactly what I love about Julia’s blog Cuckoo4Design. It wasn’t too long ago that I found her blog and I instantly loved her style and became one of her loyal followers. We hit it off, and I try not to miss a post of hers because I know its bound to have something fab and funny in it. Her living room is gorgeous yet she always finds a way to bring in a little whimsy. She is my kind of girl, she makes a space posh and then throws in that “off” element and instantly makes a glam pad feel fun and it works. Oh, and she names objects too…I think we know someone else around these parts that does…wink, wink.

profilepic310JuliaKonya

I LOVE LOVE LOVE her style! Her living room is my favorite! I wish I could have it or move in,  but I don’t think she’s accepting any new long-term house guests anytime soon. Check out her complete house tour here. Here’s a beauty shot of her glam-whimsical space:

LivingRoom

I also love her DIY’s of course. They are doable and look great.  Here’s one of her latest ones using a gold sharpie and it rocks! For the complete tutorial click here.

Here’s one that Julia has been so kind to select and share with all of us:

DIYceilingFixture4

She made her ceiling fixture from a bowl. To see how she did it check it out here.

Have a great Tuesday & Happy Reading!!!

cook. create. celebrate. Valentine’s Day

Happy DIY Monday!

With Valentine’s Day being only a few days away I thought I’d share with you a tradition we started a couple of years back. Since our kids are young and 5 times out of 7 Valentine’s Day falls on a week night, here is what we do to celebrate as a family. Holidays are big around these parts and no holiday is complete without a meal plan, activities, and decorating.

I give you the Bliss at Home Do-it-Yourself Valentine’s Feast & Party

cook.

We are a pasta lovin’ family. If you cut our veins we’d probably bleed Italian and we don’t have a drop of Italian blood running through them…not to my knowledge anyways. We are also a very health-conscious family, so if we do pasta it is a healthy spin on a fat-loaded favorite, but on Valentine’s Day we make exceptions and indulge in one of our favorite dishes Vodka Cream Pasta.

423865_3321313434674_1816636018_n_zpsd9f94128

Kristin’s Vodka Cream Pasta with Prosciutto & Basil

Ingredients:

extra-virgin olive oil (I use my Misto)

6 slices of prosciutto, cut into small pieces

16oz. penne rigate

3T un-salted butter

3 cloves of fresh garlic

2 shallots, minced

1C vodka

1/2 C chicken stock

2T tomato paste

32 oz. crushed tomatoes

coarse salt & pepper

1/2C heavy cream

fresh basil to taste

freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

Crusty bread to compliment dish

Directions:

Cook pasta until al dente, reserve 1/2 of water

While the pasta is cooking, melt the butter in a large skillet set over medium-high heat. Add the shallots and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 6 minutes. Add the garlic and continue cooking until fragrant, about a minute more.

Stir in tomatoes and their juices. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium and stir in the tomato paste, vodka, and chicken stock. Cook until most of the alcohol has evaporated, at least 5 minutes.

Stir in cream and salt. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook sauce until thickened, about 5 minutes.

In a separate non-stick pan add olive oil and fry prosciutto for a couple of minutes at medium-low heat.

Check your sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Stir in basil. (If you want a thinner sauce add in reserved water a little at a time until you achieve your desired consistency.)

In a large bowl combine pasta & sauce. Mix in prosciutto and add more basil and the cheese on top.  Serve & enjoy with crusty bread.

I like to serve everyone out of a big old bowl. I call it momma style.

create.

My kids love to help get the table ready. While I’m cooking I put them to work. They set the table, put out the decorations, and my oldest cuts out the Valentine’s hearts for all of us to fill out for each other. This year, now that my youngest is old enough, I’m going to have them decorate a paper runner for the table.

405411_3321319434824_1470017989_n

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that in my head for some reason it is all about paper decorations. We pretty much just cut out hearts, make crepe paper roses, and hang cupids and dollar store decorations everywhere. The gaudier the better! I might add balloons on the ceiling this year…we’ll see how it goes. The kids seem to like that stuff better anyways.

421767_3321307034514_327870780_n 409379_3321305994488_293394069_n

celebrate.

It’s a holiday, right? So celebrate. We celebrate with more food. No Valentine’s Day feast would be complete with out dessert. This is where Dave comes in. He is in charge of selecting this every year. On his way home from work he picks up the goods. It could be a favorite pie from a restaurant, chocolates from the local chocolatier, or our favorite cake.

418744_3321326114991_2006574239_n

We wish you a happy Valentine’s Day!!

DIY Monday.

Valentine's crafts

Since the unexpected happened this weekend (monster multiple day migraine), I shared some great Valentine’s Day crafts from around the blogosphere.

Great Reads.

Tuesday we featured Sarah and her blog Lacquer & Linen. Check out some of her great tutorials here.

Little Things.

hey girl

Did you just do a double take?? No, the one on the left IS NOT Ryan Gosling ladies! Dave says he looks better with his shirt off and he doesn’t want to shame Ryan Gosling and steal movie roles away from him. So, all the shirtless photos are for my eyes only. Sorry!

Wednesday was super funny! With Valentine’s Day less than a week away, now is the time to make that man in your life feel the love. What better way than to give one of his photos the Hey Girl treatment! Even if he adamantly resists…You can get all the details here. If you want to link to the party or just fall out of your chair laughing you can connect here. The party runs until Valentine’s Day or as my oldest says, “The Day of Lurrve” (this is followed by big belly laughs).

What I’m Loving Right Now.

bar cart 2

Thursday I shared with you my new bar cart…did the clouds just part, did you hear angels singing?? I just love it and I feel super spoiled at the moment! If you want to look at some gorgeous bar cart images, get some shopping sources to purchase your own, or get some styling ideas click here. Or you can check it out if you want some more insight into the quirks of our marriage because why wouldn’t you, right?

Weekend.

022 (4)

My youngest had his birthday this week. I’ve always hated mid-week birthdays. It just seems like such a jip so we are celebrating him this Saturday and braving the germ-infested world of the inflatable fun zone. I have high hopes of finishing my closet makeover too, that is as long as no one contracts anything. This girl is a major germaphobe!  We’ll see how it goes…

Happy Weekend!!

What I’m Loving Right Now// Bar Carts

Hey Girl!!

I can’t wait to see what everyone is going to link up to the Hey Girl Party. If you missed the details check out my post here.

My instagram tease

My Instagram teaser

So, I got an early Valentine’s Day surprise from Dave! We are so bad at surprises. Well, when I say “we” I actually mean “I”.  He is usually pretty stealthy with super-duper-top-secret-highly-confidential surprises. In fact, he takes great joy in reminding me I have no idea what he got me or I have no idea where we are going for a trip. If you are a control freak like me you know how maddening that can be! A girl has to know what to pack, right? Maybe that’s why God brought us together– control freak therapy.  I don’t know if Dave felt bad for me suffering a migraine or if he was just too excited to give me my gift. Personally, I believe it was because I Hey Girled his photos and he was overflowing with gratitude.  He was sneaky about it though, and even faked an emergency to go help his brother with his car– phone call and all– so he could sneak out and buy and hide this at my Dad’s house.

So, his gift is the inspiration behind

Embrace it in your space…

He done good!

Oh, how I love bar carts. They are just so luxe! I’ve been wanting a vintage brass bar cart for quite a while but, every time I found one it was in poor condition or it was way out of my price range. We saw this a couple of weeks back at an antique store but passed because it wasn’t in the budget–or so I thought!  Sneaky, sneaky. Dave was able to talk the owners down to $90!  Good tip: Always negotiate at antique stores and flea markets and always be willing to walk away.

The icing on the cake…

When researching this bar cart the most inexpensive one I could find is $1000! This one below is listed on 1st Dibs and is being offered at $3250 and isn’t in as good condition as ours.

Little Things: Hey Girl

For Valentine’s Day there are a lot of things you could give your man. Stop the hassle of hours of shopping for that store-bought gift and hallmark card (written by a stranger)– I have the perfect gift! You can make all his dreams come true and give him the Ryan Gosling treatment.

We have all seen the Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” images. If for some strange reason you have not that could mean one of two things: 1) Either you have never been on Pinterest or 2) you are deep in a jungle doing missionary work with no access to social media. If you fall into those two categories here’s a sampling of some of my Hey Girl favorites:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So, to express my undying passion and love to the greatest husband ever (who by the way totally approves of my efforts because he’s that AWESOME) I have given my man the Hey Girl treatment.

These are totally getting framed and going in my office when it is finished!

If you would like to join in on the fun starting tomorrow you can link up your own images. Just take a photo of the love of your life and give him the Hey Girl treatment.

I just want to give a big thank-you to my husband, Dave, for being such a good sport. I am so very lucky to be married to you and you make me feel like the most important person in the world and fill every day with laughter. Thank you for always being so supportive and believing in me!  You are by far the funniest person I know! Good looks, brains, and a quick wit– I got the best one! Love ya babe!

DIY Monday// Valentine’s Day Ideas

Good Morning!

Well, sometimes the best laid plans don’t pan out, isn’t that the truth? I ended up suffering a migraine for 2 whole days over the weekend. Not very conducive to a productive weekend to say the least. So, on Sunday I chose to help Dave work on the kitchen and I continued to paint woodwork (which I hate to start, but once I get that first layer of paint on –OH, BABY– I can already see my efforts are going to pay off!)

I started doing the door frame of the coat closet. Since I had to take the door off and all, I decided that next week for DIY Monday I am going to show you how I am going to take my lack luster closet and turn it into something fabulous…I hope!

P1100796

I would love to be showing you a DIY today, but since it wasn’t doable this weekend I thought I’d feature some awesome Valentine’s Day projects for all of us to copy-cat!

Sarah at Lacquer & Linen made these adorable candy jars. I love those arrows and may be stealing that idea for our V-day dinner we do every year. Check out the details here.

Kristin at the Hunted Interior did a fun spin on a banner. I love that she used photos!

I am totally going to make these pom-pom monsters with my boys! So fun! I love it when there are fun ideas for Valentine’s Day that boys love too! For details go to Jill’s blog Create.Craft.Love.

I know what you’re thinking! Two posts in one day…it’s like Christmas, Easter, and your birthday all rolled into one! I hope you can read the sarcasm…truth be told, I don’t like to post more than once in a day, but today is Feb. 1st! The start of another month and you know I have to give you guys a monthly recap too! Plus, I have a really busy weekend ahead and I thought this would make for some good lazy morning reading.

I feel like 2013 started off great and I have enjoyed our new schedule for the year and hope you are too. I am so grateful to all of you who check in daily, weekly, and monthly 🙂

Here is the Best of January recap:

JanDIYprojects_zps8e5eeb41

DIY Map Art:  Dave and I made some Map Art for our son’s bedroom. Our little George Bailey loves it!  DIY Decorative Boxes:  Pantone announced emerald green the color of the year for 2013 so I felt inspired to make some decorative boxes. DIY snake-skin Jar:   I’ve been feeling animal prints lately and made a snake-skin jar from an old candle and cardstock. DIY Gold Elephant:  Little Priscilla the elephant joined our home and was given the gold leaf treatment.

Downloads2_zps09204c68

We continued to work on our Kitchen Possible! Remodel finishing the floors and installing baseboards. I will have an update for you this month. I have been bit by bit painting over the oak woodwork throughout the house and gave tips on how to do it without stripping or sanding. In my attempts to organize everything I made our linen closet more user-friendly. Our living room continues to evolve and I added a new chandelier and blinged out some free Craigslist wall lamps.

whatim_zpsbde02efa

What I’m Loving Right Now… This is my new favorite weekly to write and read your comments about! It gives me a chance to gush about trends, styles, and decor I love and I get to hear you guys weigh-in on it. Such great fun! In January, we talked about equestrian inspired design which I think was brought on by watching too much Downton Abbey. We dished on the leopard trends in home decor and I had to try it out. I’m still obsessing about faux taxidermy + antlers and so happy I found an affordable way to add them into my home. We also talked about chinoiserie decor (say that 5x fast!) and I dreamed about a table decked out in blue and white ginger jars.

Thanks for making January such a fun one!

I would love to hear your feedback too. Are you loving the new schedule? Is there something you could do without? Do you like the weekly recap? Would love to hear your thoughts…

Happy Weekend!!

What I like about the Glade Expressions Fragrance Mist is that it is made with appearance in mind.  So, if you leave it out, say, by your toilet…it doesn’t look like you set a big can of fragrance spray out for certain people in your household. All you have to do when it runs out is buy another refill and pop it back in the holder.
